Some levels feature gimmicks that don’t add much to the gameplay experience. Visually, the game has some creative backdrops, but overall, the level design is relatively average. However, the strategic decision-making aspect is limited, as the main consideration often boils down to which boss is the most annoying when they reach full strength. These missions can be completed in any order, and as you progress, the enemies become stronger and the missions get longer. In terms of mission structure, you can choose from four color-coded missions, each themed after a different gang boss. The variety of fighters available to unlock and choose from is remarkable, with each character offering unique abilities and playstyles. The tag system adds depth to the gameplay, allowing you to choose a pair of characters to fight with instead of just one. The single-button combos and direction-plus-button special moves are easy to execute, making it accessible to players who may not be familiar with platform fighters. The combat in Double Dragon Gaiden is simple yet satisfying. While it may not be remarkable in any other way, it offers a great foundation for an enjoyable gaming experience. Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons is an old-school side-scrolling beat ’em up game that combines roguelike elements and tag-team combat.
